MPhil Programmes

The following MPhil programmes and options tracks are available in most years. Prospective applicants wishing to follow a particular track should contact the Postgraduate Admissions Administrator to check on course availability for the year they are applying for. For more details on the courses themselves or the course structure, contact the Teaching Administrator.

After the MPhil

Our MPhil programmes will equip you with the skills needed for further postgraduate research, or for work in museums, professional archaeology, heritage policy and administration, or other related areas.

As well as gaining in-depth knowledge of your chosen specialisation and learning research skills, our MPhil degree will also give you training in a range of transferable skills, such as writing, presentation, research design, data analysis and formulating and analysing arguments. By the end of the course, you should be able to exercise these skills in independent research, and in any professional-level work which requires them.

About a third of our MPhil graduates go on to further study at PhD level in Archaeology, at Cambridge or elsewhere. About a third go on to archaeology- or heritage-related jobs, and about a third go on to work in a wide range of other sectors that use their skills - research, lab work, editing and publishing, charities, computing, administrating, and many others.
Students wishing to continue on to PhD work at Cambridge normally need to achieve a 68 or higher in their overall average and in their dissertation; they should also have discussed and agreed a research topic with their proposed supervisor. See our Prospective PhD pages for more information on applying and funding.
