Sketches of the Montelabate Landscape

by Charlotte Stoddart

The abbey viewed from Col di Marzo on the Etruscan frontier

This view sketched in August 2011 looks south from the Etruscan frontier with Umbrian Gubbio towards Perugia overlooking the ancient abbey of Santa Maria di Valdiponte. The view looks down from oak woodlands across the olive groves that surround the ancient abbey down towards the Ventia, a tributary of the Tiber.

The Castle of Ramazzano from the north

This view sketched in August 2011 looks across the valley beyond the abbey towards the Castle of Ramazzano. Out of sight on the same line is the ancient Etruscan and Medieval city of Perugia.

The small Etruscan centre of Civitella Benazzone from the East

Civitella Benazzone was a small Etruscan centre placed by the larger city of Perugia on the left bank of the Tiber. The northern edge of the centre (to the right) sheltered the abbey of San Paolo di Val di Ponte, a rival of the larger abbey of Santa Maria di Val di Ponte. The abbey of San Paolo di Val di Ponte was the subject of an Anglo Italian excavation in the 1970s.
