Egyptian blue is one of the first artificial inorganic pigments, a stable and versatile artistic material that received wide recognition and became a substantial part of Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Greek and Roman artistic palettes. At the same time, information regarding Egyptian blue production remains scarce. In this talk we will try to answer two questions: where and how was Egyptian blue produced? We will also address technical ceramics used in the process and assess its relevance for reconstructing the whole chaîne opératoire of Egyptian blue production.
