Those who have studied Athenian pottery have largely done so in order to group pots by style, to identify or create artists and workshops, or to explain why a particular image appears on a particular shape of pot at a particular time and in a particular place. This paper is about how looking at thousands of pots, and looking at the subjects they depict rather than the style in whcih they depict them, enables much past scholarship to be falsified and Athenian political and social history to be rewritten.
