Biography
I am a first-year PhD student in Archaeology at Selwyn College, Cambridge, with a focus on human evolution, 3D reconstructions, and biomechanical simulations. I gained my undergraduate degree at Birkbeck (UoL), where I completed several projects on the physiological adaptations of Neanderthals, cranial reconstructions of Homo sapiens, and depth map analyses of prehistoric material culture.
The common thread in my studies was the exploration of digital 3D methodologies for understanding the past. In my BA dissertation, I employed scanning and 3D modelling techniques to reveal post-depositional and environmental impacts on the shape of a Parisian epitaph. During my MPhil in Archaeological Science at Cambridge, I collaborated with leading institutions in the 3D industry to advance laser-scanning accuracy for digital reconstructions of reflective materials and osteological remains. I have since been working on digital morphometric pattern recognition and 3D simulation analyses to track evolutionary processes and osteological adaptations.
Research
PhD Research:
I am working on the digital reconstruction of the Shanidar Z remains, primarily the thorax and shoulder girdle, and their morphometric and biomechanical properties. Working with Dr Emma Pomeroy, I hope to address critical questions about morphological adaptation, as well as behavioural and societal dynamics of Neanderthals at Shanidar Cave and beyond.
General Interests:
My main research interests are human evolution and adaptation, with a focus on human osteology and the prospects of computational analyses in morphometrics and biomechanics. I am also very interested in using emerging 3D technologies to boost outreach and communications in archaeology, to make research data more engaging and interesting for a wider audience beyond academia, and to improve digital infrastructure in archaeology for large-scale analyses.
