Biography

Dr Mire is the former head of Somaliland archaeology and currently heads the Horn Heritage Foundation.  She is a passionate advocate for the development of heritage management strategies on the African continent that align with indigenous conceptions of the past, notions of heritage and that help promote better cross-cultural understanding and peace and reconciliation in sub-Saharan countries that have been fractured by civil wars and other forms of conflict. She has pioneered research on the intangible heritage of greater Somalia, recently publishing a summation of over fifteen years on this topic with an emphasis on the deep history of certain key spiritual values in a single-authored monograph. She is also a strong advocate for using the power of digital technologies to teach about Africa’s deep history to lay audiences, and has run an award-winning Mass Open Online Coures (MOOC) on African archaeology for a number of years.
