Biography

Following the completion of my degree and PhD at Cambridge in Near Eastern Archaeology and Assyriology, I was appointed a Junior Research Fellow at Wolfson College, Oxford (1995-1999), where my research focused on exploring the rich potential of the "Sippar Collections" of the British Museum. I was then for fifteen years (2000-2014) a field director with the Ziyaret Tepe Archaeological Project, responsible for the direction of excavations in the lower town. Overlapping with this I was (2009-2016) the Archaeological Advisor on the Citadel of Erbil Citadel, responsible for the archaeological assessment of the mound and the planning and execution of a major excavation project within the constrictions of the historic standing architecture. The completion of this work coincided with my being appointed at the British Museum (2016-2021) as Lead Archaeologist in the Iraq Emergency Heritage Management Training Scheme.

Research

My interests focus on the archaeology and epigraphy of Mesopotamia in the first millennium BC. On the epigraphic side this has included (i) research into the Neo-Babylonian and Achaemenid period archives of the Ebabbara temple of the sun god Shamash in Sippar, and (ii) publication of Neo-Assyrian texts from Ziyaret Tepe and elsewhere. At the same time I have been very active in fieldwork, participating in excavations in Iraq, Syria, Turkey, Egypt, Cyprus, Sudan, India and Pakistan. I have been most involved in Assyrian archaeology, working on excavations at the imperial capital of Nineveh and at the provincial capitals of Tell Masaikh (ancient Kar-Ashurnasirpal) in Syria and Ziyaret Tepe (ancient Tušhan) in southeastern Turkey. Most recently I have been directing the excavation of a Parthian settlement and an Assyrian fort at the Darband-i Rania, a pass through the western Zagros mountains in Iraqi Kurdistan.
