Biography

James Whitley is a scholars of Dark Age and Archaic Greece and Crete, publishing three key monographs on these topics (Whitley 1991; 2001; 2023). He was also Director of the major British research institution for Hellenic Studies (including archaeology) in Greece, the British School at Athens (2002-7). When in post he was responsible for producing an annual digest of all archaeological finds in Greece, entitled ‘Archaeology in Greece’. He is also known for his important fieldwork at Praisos summarised in his 1998 article: From Minoans to Eteocretans: the Praisos region 1200-500 BC.

Until earlier this year Professor of Mediterranean Archaeology (2008-25) at Cardiff University. 

He is a scholar who bridges the scholarship of the classical world with modern theoretical approaches and fieldwork.
