Biography

I am currently working as research associate for the project “Memories for Life”, where I am focusing primarily on commemorative practices of non-royal people in Mesopotamia during the late 2nd and early 1st millennia BC.

I studied Mesopotamian Archaeology and Assyriology at Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich, where I received my Magister Artium degree in 2011. Afterwards, I was able to conduct PhD- related research at the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago (2012–2013), before taking up a research position for the Sirkeli Höyük excavation project at the University of Bern.

In my dissertation, which I submitted at the University of Bern in 2016, I analysed the architecture and meaning of Neo-Assyrian fortifications and showed how that they contributed to the Assyrian kings’ efforts in creating an Assyrian identity.

Since receiving my PhD, I have been focusing on the study of Neo-Hittite societies. I am particularly interested in reconstructing the development of social practices and material culture within these states as well as in analysing the impact that the expanse of the Neo-Assyrian Empire had on Neo-Hittite societies.

I have participated in multiple excavations in the Near East and Central Asia, including Tell Bazi and Tell Halaf (Syria), Gird-i Shamlu (Iraq), Sirkeli Höyük (Turkey), Tilla Bulak (Uzbekistan) and Gonur Depe (Turkmenistan). At Tell Halaf and Sirkeli Höyük, I was in charge of excavation areas in the Iron Age lower towns. Since 2018, I am conducting my own field research on the mountainous outcrop Bekçi Kulübesi, which we recently identified as the upper town of the ancient settlement at Sirkeli Höyük.
