The region of Russian Karelia

The landscape of present day Karelia is dominated by coniferous forests. Russian Karelia shares an archaeological, geographical, historical and cultural heritage with Finnish Karelia. The rock carvings of northern Russia are one of the most prominent examples of visual imagery produced by fisher-gatherer-hunters in Europe.
