The Department of Archaeology and the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research are delighted that Professor Gilly Carr has received an OBE for services to Holocaust research and education in the 2025 New Year Honours.

Prof Carr is University Professor of Conflict Archaeology and Holocaust Heritage, Director of Studies in Archaeology at St Catharine’s College and Academic Director in Archaeology at Cambridge’s Institute of Continuing Education. Prof Carr is a member of both the UK delegation of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) and the academic advisory board for the UK Holocaust Memorial Centre. Professor Carr has a particular research interest in wartime incarceration, internment and imprisonment. 2024 saw the publication of her latest book 'A Materiality of Internment' which drew on over 15 years of research and interviews with more than 65 former internees.

The New Years Honour acknowledges a significant year of work on Holocaust research and education for Prof Carr including leading the launch of an International heritage Charter to safeguard Holocaust sites in January and the release of a report about the number of people killed during the Nazi Occupation of Alderney in May.

Dr Tamsin O'Connell, Head of Department, said "I am delighted that Gilly’s sustained scholarship and heritage activism has been recognised with this OBE award."

"I am absolutely thrilled for my research and teaching to be recognised in this way. I've been working hard on behalf of victims of Nazism and the Holocaust for 15 years and for this to be seen as nationally important and worthwhile encourages me to continue my work with vigour."
