We are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Matthew Brudenell to the post of Director of the Cambridge Archaeological Unit (CAU)

Matthew (Matt) joins the CAU from Oxford Archaeology East where he has been a Senior Project Manager since 2015 managing numerous fieldwork and post-excavation projects across the eastern region. His main area of interest is the later Bronze Age and Iron Age of Eastern England, on which he has published several papers and co-authored monographs.

Dr Brudenell has previously held positions with Suffolk County Council and as a senior project officer and prehistoric ceramic specialist at the CAU. He holds a BA in Archaeology and Anthropology from the University of Cambridge and a PhD in Archaeology from the University of York.

On taking up the CAU directorship, Matt said, "I am delighted to be returning to the CAU where I started my career twenty years ago. It is a privilege to lead such a talented team of experienced archaeologists, and I relish the opportunity to continue to enhance and promote the CAU's outstanding reputation for research excellence".

Prof Cyprian Broodbank, Head of the Department of Archaeology, said, "For thirty years CAU has been a jewel in the crown of Cambridge Archaeology. Under Matt Brudenell's leadership it will continue to flourish, building upon the unique reputation created under Chris Evans and developing new strengths for the coming decades, in close collaboration with the Department and McDonald Institute. This is a moment both to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of the Unit under Chris' direction, and to welcome Matt warmly back to Cambridge in his new role".

Dr Brudenell takes up the directorship on 1 September 2021.
