Pamela Jane Smith

Professor Dorothy Garrod

Associate Fellow at Newnham College Cambridge, Garrod directed excavations in Gibraltar, Western Judaea, Southern Kurdistan and Mount Carmel. In 1939, she became the first female elected to a professorship at Cambridge University.

Once elected Disney Professor of Archaeology, she worked to establish Archaeology and Anthropology as a full degree course. Her election influenced the decision to admit women to full membership of Cambridge University in 1948. My colleague, Jane Callander from Birkbeck College, London University and I have published a report on Dorothy Garrod in Antiquity volume 71 Number 272 June 1997 pages 265-70.

Celebratory Exhibition

I held a Celebratory Exhibition in Professor Garrod's honour at Cambridge University in 1998. This included many unpublished papers and photographs donated by Garrod's family.
