Research interests
My current research can be divided into the three distinctive areas of research: art, religion and the cultural categorisation of self and the natural environment, which in turn relate to different aspects of archaeological theory and practice. I conduct field work in Northern Russia, Siberia and Japan.
- Fisher-gatherer-hunters of Eurasia
- Art of prehistoric communities
- Animism and Shamanism as expressions of, or aspects of, oldest religions
- Use of art and food in the creation of identities by prehistoric communities
Current research projects
- Visual perception and cognition in the rock carvings of northern Russia
- The origins of Shamanism: Rock art and the world's `oldest religion'
- The role of the natural environment in art, beliefs and rituals in Jomon and Yayoi Japan
