This map is based on a presentation I gave at the Leckhampton Society on June 1st 2005. It's just a sketch map, not created using any kind of mapping software. The points are just plotted freehand. Additionally, areas with multiple sites such as Winchester, York, and Oxford are represented as one point; on a proper map I'll jitter them to make them stand out.
Red dots indicate sites where charcoal burials are reported, but the reports are unconfirmed. Small black dots denote sites with 1-5 charcoal burials, medium dots 6-20 burials, and large dots sites with over 20.
The apparent distribution on the preliminary map is suggestive; the largest numbers of charcoal burials appear to be concentrated in the south and south-west. However, it's important to remember that the apparent lack of charcoal burials in East Anglia, which is the obvious anomaly, may be the result of a lack of excavated and published cemeteries. This is an important question, and something I'm working on right now.
