Current research interests
My current research interests relate broadly to the ancient historical geography of India. Having completed my study of the archaeological geography of the Ganga plain (1991-2005), I am now focussed on understanding the route network of the Deccan and the south, and also on putting forward a geo-political frame within which the ancient Indian dynasties operated. As an extension of my Ganga plain interests, I am currently undertaking a study of the distribution of archaeological sites in Haryana, and I have just finished analysing some of the socio-political cross-currents of Indian archaeology.
- Archaeological geography of the Ganga plain
- The upper Ganga (Oudh, Rohilkhand and the Doab)
- Ancient routes of the Deccan and the south
I have undertaken fieldwork in different parts of India, Bangladesh. and Iran. Whilst at Delhi University, I established a departmental museum, and for some years I edited the bulletin of the Indian Society for Prehistoric and Quaternary Studies.
Current research projects
- Ancient Routes of the Deccan and the South
- Geo-political orbits of Ancient India: the Geographical Frames of Ancient Indian Dynasties
