Dissecting identity in Late Iron Age south eastern Europe
The thesis will investigate the construction and expression of large scale group identity (especially ethnic) in South-East Europe through burial evidence. One of the main goals is to put to the test and challenge the current views of monolithic ethnic blocks (Dacian, Celtic, Thracian) and introduce new ideas about the coagulation and maintenance of identity. These new concepts of identity in the Iron Age will be discussed in a conference (Fingerprinting the Iron Age) organised by myself and Dr. Simon Stoddart. A secondary goal of the thesis is to point out the deep political and nationalist implications of Late Iron Age archaeology, especially in the case of Romania.
Supervisors: Dr Simon Stoddart;Dr. Gelu Florea. Advisor: Dr John Robb.
