Recent archaeological theory has given particular prominence to landscape archaeology, and has recognised that an understanding of human perception and engagement with places is crucial for interpreting past landscapes. However, the development of appropriate, rigorous, methodologies has been comparatively neglected. Integrated analysis, high resolution terrain models and imagery, and visualisation techniques can greatly assist in understanding the ways in which people engaged with their surroundings.
