Research interests
My research focuses on long term socio-economic and political change, particularly in relation to state formation and the impact that the growth of states and empires have on the societies and cultures of subjugated regions. This research has focussed on a range of geographical areas and chronological periods in both South Asia and Western Asia. I am currently engaged in field projects focussing on the Chalcolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age and Historic period in Pakistan, Iran and India.

Current research projects
I am presently involved in the following internationally collaborative research projects in Pakistan, Iran and India:
- 1998–present: Bannu archaeological project, Bannu Basin, NWFP, Pakistan
- 2002–present: Mamasani archaeological project, Mamasani district, Fars, Iran
- 2006–present: PAK-UK Pushkalavati archaeological research project—Bala Hisar at Charsadda
- 2007–present: India-UK collaborative research project— Land, Water and Settlement
