NEW: the dating programme
The Troina Project is developing a strategy of regional survey followed by selective excavation to investigate the long-term archaeological history of the Troina region. Three particular foci are being addressed:
-
Examination of the ancient environment from c.100,000 BC to modern times.
-
The expansion of human populations into the upland areas from the lowland
plains (e.g. Catania), focusing on the Neolithic/Bronze Age transition.
-
The formation of the territorial identity of Troina, which is likely to have taken place from the end of the Bronze Age, and the developing relations between indigenous and Greek populations.
This web site was originally prepared, in Troina, as post-excavation analysis was carried out in Spring 2001.
New phases of the project can be found here: the dating programme. Please look here for the specialists writing up the site; read about the previous years' fieldwork and the people who participated; learn about the tools and techniques used in fieldwork and analysis, or see the Comune di Troina and its surroundings. A list of publications associated with the project is available.
