The Lismore Landscape Project: Survey

The aim of the survey is to enhance the results of the RCAHMS surveys of the 1960s and 1970s by detailed survey of all known sites and use of new aerial photographic survey and surface survey to detect new sites. The research methods include:

• Aerial photography
• Differential GPS to ground truth aerial photographs to provide an enhanced digital map of the island.
• Surface observation
• EDM based topographic survey of individual monuments.
• Geophysical survey

The survey phase of the project started with a reconnaissance in 2002. The two main objectives were achieved:

• All known monuments on the island were visited
• A topographical survey was undertaken of Tirefour

The plans for 2004--5 include detailed topographical survey of the following sites:

• Park Dun
• Castle Coeffin Fort
• Clachan enclosure
• Cill an Suidhe enclosure
• Sean Dun
• Dun Kilcheran
• An Dun `broch'
• Loch Fiart dun
• Dun An Dun Sloc a' Bhrighide
• Dun Chruban
