The Lismore Landscape Project: Research Aims

The Lismore Landscape Project is investigating the Iron Age landscape of the island of Lismore. This island, located in Loch Linnhe near Oban in Argyll (Scotland), was surveyed by the The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) in the 1960s. A recent survey of priorities in the British Iron Age identified Argyll as a key area for more detailed landscape investigation.

The research methods include:

This site will be updated as the project progresses. Three phases have been completed: systematic aerial photographic coverage, a desk-top assessment and a reconnaissance survey (August 2002). Highlights of the initial work include GIS-calculated viewsheds and, for comparison, photographic panoramas (which will shortly be converted to Quick Time format).
