Tirefour from the west
The excavation phase of the project is planned for 2004--5. A representative selection of Iron Age monuments is being chosen for excavation to provide a clear dated sequence and proper understanding of the role of different types of field monument. The research methods include:
Northern outworks of the Tirefour monument
Tirefour has been selected for initial excavation in 2004.
Monuments investigated by topographical and geophysical survey in 2004 will, in turn, be investigated by selective excavation during 2005. Reconnaissance survey was undertaken of all known monuments during August 2002.
Post excavation and analysis will be completed in 2006. The aim is to create an in-depth analysis of the distinctive settlement patterns of a small island with a wide range of iron age monuments. This can be compared/contrasted with other settlement models for the Scottish Iron Age.
