Conference papers may be submitted for publication in a special issue of the journal CATENA

Title: Developments in International Geoarchaeology

Guest editors: Charles French and Karen Milek

Publication Schedule

  • First submission deadline: October 1, 2007
  • Reviewers' deadline: November 1, 2007
  • Final submission deadline: February 1, 2008
  • Target publication date: March/April 2008

These deadlines will be strictly adhered to in order to ensure that the project is not delayed.

Submission of Manuscripts

Manuscripts must be written in English. Authors whose native language is not English are recommended to seek the advice of a colleague whose mother-tongue is English before submitting their manuscript.

The submitted manuscripts must follow Elsevier's authors' instructions.

All manuscripts will be submitted and reviewed through Elsevier's electronic gateway. If you have not used the Elsevier Editorial System (EES) before, you will need to register before you can log in to submit your paper. The tutorial for authors gives you all the information you need to submit your paper and to track it through the review process.

Please Note: To ensure that your manuscript is correctly identified for inclusion in the DIG 2007 special issue, it is important that you select the option "Special Issue: Geoarchaeology Conference" from the drop-down menu when you reach the "Article Type" step in the submission process.

If you encounter problems or have a query about the Elsevier e-submission system, please write to authorsupport@elsevier.com or contact the author support department by telephone:

Peer Reviewing Process

The guest editors will take care of the strict peer-reviewing process, which is essential to ensure that only quality papers are published. According to CATENA's guidelines for special issues, the procedure will advance as follows:

  • Invitation to publish as part of a thematic set is not a guarantee of publication.  Strict peer review standards will apply and the Editor-in-Chief will arbitrate if necessary.
  • Each paper must be reviewed by at least two international specialists (three in case of doubt). The guest editors will provide explicit recommendations for revision to authors, and will ensure that revision is in accordance with their recommendations and the reviewers' comments.
  • If major revision is asked for by one of the referees it will be reviewed again by at least one referee.
  • The referees are the choice of the guest editors, but authors may put forward suggestions of potential reviewers.
  • The guest editors will provide copies of all relevant author and review correspondence to the responsible Editor-in-Chief, as well as a summary of the review procedure clarifying the reasons for their (positive) recommendation
  • The complete set of final manuscripts, accompanied by all the required information, will be evaluated by an Editor‑in‑Chief of the journal, who makes the final decision on acceptance of manuscripts in consultation with the guest editors.
  • Once the manuscript is going to press, first or corresponding authors will receive galley proofs for checking.

Copies and Offprints

Each corresponding author will receive 25 free reprints of his/her manuscript as well as a complimentary copy of the issue. There will not be any page charges.

Colour Images

Colour in the web version of CATENA is gratis. Colour in the printed version of the journal is subject to a charge of 350 Euros for the first figure and 175 Euros for consecutive figures. Authors must indicate which figures should be published in colour in the printed version, and that they are willing to cover the costs involved.

Any left-over conference sponsorship money will be put towards the costs of colour pages in the printed version of the journal in order to reduce the authors' costs as much as possible.
