Research Clusters
States, Urbanism, and Colonialism
This cluster focuses on the formation and nature of states, empires, and other complex societies, with a particular interest in testing archaeological evidence against documentary sources. This research stretches from our attempts to understand the evolution of the first cities and states in Ancient Mesopotamia, Syria, Iran and South Asia, to the development of socio-economic and domestic life in Bronze Age Egypt, and the nature of contact zones including the detection of national and regional identities in Anglo-Saxon England. This research has seen particularly strong links with the Human Landscapes and the Materiality, Art, and Religion clusters.
